What Does The Transmission Do?

In simple terms, the transmission sends power from the engine to the drive wheels (2-wheel drive, 4-wheel drive, etc.). It works in conjunction with the engine's RPM range, gears and drive wheels and is ultimately responsible for the speed and acceleration of your vehicle.

The transmission depends on transmission fluid - a lubricant and a coolant allowing clutches to engage and disengage, valves to open and close, springs to load and unload, gears to change, and more. So, it's very important to make sure that transmission fluid is free from any foreign particles. The way to do that is with a transmission filter.

Transmission filters prolong the life of the fluid and transmission by trapping potentially harmful particles and abrasives. Therefore it is very important to make sure you regularly change your transmission fluid and filter every two years or 24,000 miles or intervals recommended in your vehicle's owners manual.

Potentially Harmful Signs

Automobile transmissions are typically reliable so they are out-of-sight out-of-mind. But, problems can happen so here are a few signs that can indicate it's time to change your transmission filter and fluid:

• Fluid color has changed from red to brown or yellow
• Sharp pungent smell or burned-rubber odor
• Rough shifting
• Varnish on transmission dipstick
• New or unusual noises
• Clicking or buzzing sounds
